“How might we provide a way for family members across generations and languages to communicate so that they can increase connection with each other?”

As a team of Asian Australians who have experienced acculturation, designing for cultural, inter-generational connections was our aim. We've also gathered first to focus on renewing traditional methods of engagement for senior users. Disengagement within communities has worsened during the COVID pandemic, especially amongst families within our community. In this, our users had one common need: that there were cultural and physical barriers that affected the way that our senior users created and or maintained their familial relationships.

Hence we decided to create PICO which would take the form of a collaborative online photo scrapbook. Scrap-booking existed over many generations, So PICO uses this as one of its strengths to bridge inter-generational and cultural barriers, through creating shared experiences within a re-imagined method of collaborative journalism.
